Making the Transition

RURAL EDUCATED.  WORLD READY.

Transitions

From Elementary School to High School
Although moving from middle school to high school can be a very exciting time for students, the transition is filled with great anxiety and stress for many adolescents (Hertzog, Morgan & Lena, 1997).  Substantial research literature has emerged documenting the fact that the transition into high school is marked by increased disengagement and declining motivation, particularly for low-performing youth (national Research Council, 2004).  Supporting a smooth transition to high school requires allowing struggling students to catch up while also ensuring they are challenged and engaged in learning.

From Day School to Boarding School
There are key benefits your child can gain from attending a boarding school, particularly during high school.  Boarding schools provide a boost in self-confidence for students and help them to develop their independence and self-management skills while still providing a safety net of school organized routines and schedules.  There are also studies that suggest that boarding schools provide an added edge in academic performance, since the routines in a boarding environment provide for a structured study routine and tend to result in greater time spent on homework, revision, and study during these vital high school years.

From Home School to Classroom
More than 1.5 million children, about 3 percent of the school-age population in the United States are home-schooled.  Making the switch from home school to a traditional classroom can be challenging.  A new social scene, different academic expectations, and a teacher who doesn’t answer to “Mom or Dad” are just a few.  Most home-schooled children who switch to a regular school, do so successfully, says Russell Hyken an education counselor in St. Louis, fit in academically as well as socially.  The key to a smooth transition, he says, is preparation.
