Testing Program

Guiding Growth

Each year, in October, the seminary offers a series of standardized tests. The exact date is dictated by the PSAT nation-wide testing date. One of the major purposes of the testing program is to provide teachers, parents and students with information to aid student learning. The results of all such tests are given to the students as a useful tool for planning future educational priorities.

Freshmen take the Iowa Test of Educational Development (ITED). This is a high school achievement test that is utilized to assess intellectual skills that represent the long-term goals of secondary education. Critical thinking skills of analysis and evaluation are key components.

Sophomores take the “practice ACT,” or PLAN test. This test measures academic development, helps identify career interest and assists students in preparing for the American College Test (ACT).

Juniors take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT). This test measures general verbal and mathematical reasoning abilities. The results can help in selecting a college, offers scholarship competitions conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, and assists students in preparing for the regular College Board Test known as the SAT I.

Most Colleges require some form of a college admission test; some require more than one. The two most commonly recognized forms are the ACT and the SAT 1. Students should check with the colleges they are considering applying to and take whatever test or tests the college recommends. Most Wisconsin schools require the ACT.

St. Lawrence recommends students take the ACT and/or SAT 1 examinations at the end of their junior year or in the fall of their senior year. The seminary provides transportation to Fond du Lac for ACT/SAT testing during the fall semester. Students wishing to take the ACT/SAT at other times and at other test sites must confirm this with the Guidance Counselor prior to registration.

Some international students may also be required by colleges to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). This test measures one’s ability to understand North American English. International students are able to obtain more information from the school counselor concerning the dates and locations of this test.
