The mission of the Student Health Office is to maintain a high level of health among the students through health education on an individual and group basis, various screening procedures, and close cooperation and coordination with parents, faculty, and staff.

The Student Health Office provides the highest level of nursing care through illness and injury assessment and intervention according to written protocols and procedures overseen by the Medical Director.

St. Lawrence Seminary High School's Student Health Department has a unique challenge. Since the school is not only a high school, but also a boarding school, the needs of the students cannot be met through the usual public school policies and procedures. Our nurse cannot call parents to take a sick student home. Health care must be provided either on-site or in the local area. All health care requiring the services of health personnel off-campus is arranged through the Student Health Office. Bills for medication, examination, treatment and consultation from medical facilities and personnel outside the seminary will be sent to the parents.

Emergency care is always available for the students. Established Student Health Department hours are published and posted. Students are not to go to the Student Health Center when expected elsewhere, except for emergencies.

When a medical judgment indicates confinement to bed, the student will usually be placed in the health care center.

Parents making medical or dental appointments for students must notify the school nurse as soon as possible. The nurse will then notify the appropriate people to excuse the student from class and obtain permission to leave campus. Normally, these appointments should be made when the student is home.

The school nurse is also responsible for administering all medications. Students are assigned times to receive medications and those who fail to comply are reported to the Dean of Students. Students are not allowed to keep prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and/or supplements in the dormitory or on their person without the permission of the nurse. A supply of commonly used over-the-counter medications can be obtained through the nurse or dorm supervisors. Therefore, all of the above-mentioned medications are to be sent directly to the Student Health Center.
