The entire student body is divided into eighteen to twenty fraternities depending on the school population. Each fraternity has between ten and twelve students. The core of the fraternity is the seniors and the freshmen they sponsor. Every freshman has a senior sponsor. Each new upperclassman has a sponsor from his own grade. Each May, the school provides juniors with the names of one or two incoming freshmen for whom they will serve as sponsors for the coming year. Selected freshmen and sophomores are given the names of new members of their own class to sponsor. Each student sponsor writes a letter to the new students they will sponsor during the next academic year. In the fall, it is the student sponsors' responsibility to help orient and support the new students as they become a part of the SLS community. The school administration makes every attempt to balance the fraternities based on school class, culture and compatibility. Fraternities sit together in chapel. Liturgical ministries are assigned by fraternity. Fraternities also take turns leading the community in prayer on Saturdays. During the second semester, fraternities gather to pray together. Every three tables in the dining room is a combination of two fraternities. Social events such as the Winter Carnival and Field Day involve competition by fraternity. |
