The Canteen

Learn More...

The Canteen at SLS is a multi-purpose space with a variety of functions. Probably most important, the Canteen functions as a gathering space and snack shop. We carry a variety of canned and bottled juice and pop. We also carry many sport drink flavors and water. Using the 3 microwave ovens as well as the 7 pizza ovens, the St. Lawrence student is able to purchase a pizza, hot pocket, or chicken tenders, and cook them to perfection! We also carry an extensive line of candy and snack items.

Another important function is providing the place and the atmosphere for an after hours, informal gathering place for students and staff. The Canteen functions as a common area where students and staff can spend time together. The Canteen even functions sometimes as a study area. It serves as a meeting place for friends of the same or different classes. On most Friday and Saturday evenings, the Canteen is one of the most popular places on the campus. The Canteen Crew, a student group, functions as an entertainment committee and sponsors various activities like Cosmic Bowling and tournaments for video games on some weekend evenings.

The canteen “store” is open twice each day, in the afternoon and in the evening. The canteen space is always available outside of scheduled events.

For the student on site 24/7, the canteen also functions as a school store. We carry a variety of common school supplies. We also carry numerous personal items like deodorant, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, as well as laundry detergent and softener sheets. We also carry a variety of miscellaneous supplies like combination locks for lockers, and flip-flops.

The canteen is also the source for purchasing St. Lawrence logo wear. Sweatshirts, polo shirts, baseball caps, and other goodies can be found here.

Aware that a portion of our student body is of limited means, efforts are made to stock items in various price ranges, with a minimum markup. The Canteen is also the recycling center for beverage containers. A number of students will trade in containers for canteen products.

Despite our minimum markup, there are proceeds that accrue to the Canteen from our sales. These proceeds help support a children’s hospital in the West Bank and a Seminary in Uganda. Uniforms for the various St. Lawrence teams are purchased from Canteen proceeds. The St. Lawrence participation in the Angel Tree Project is funded in part from Canteen proceeds as well as a St. Lawrence mission trip to Mexico in late May for some of the members of the junior class. Often the purchase of equipment for direct student use is also financed by Canteen proceeds.
