Faculty Evaluations, Academic Probation

Guiding Growth

One of the school’s purposes is to provide preparation for ministry in the Church. Spiritual, behavioral and academic progress are just a few important components, among many, of a student’s entire process of growing to a mature future community and church leader. Therefore, at the middle and end of every quarter, the faculty, along with the student supervisory staff, meet to discuss every student’s progress. These discussions attempt to measure the student’s success in fulfilling the school’s objectives and the student profile, both academically and behaviorally. Prior to the meeting, the Academic Dean compiles a list of names of those students who are academically deficient (receiving a D or F) in their classes. Recommendations for assistance for the student may be made at this time. Parents will be notified about any area of concern brought forward at these meetings.

The normal criterion for academic probation is a GPA lower than a 2.00, two D’s of any kind, or one F in a marking period. A student is ordinarily placed on probation at the end of a quarter or semester. Both the parents and the student are notified in the case of academic probation.

The fourth quarter evaluation also addresses the question of the student’s return for the next year. This judgment is made on an individual’s overall growth during the past year. A student whose behavior and academics show reasonable progress will be invited to return.

When a student is placed on Academic Probation he has extra study hall time on Saturday mornings (the “Breakfast Club”). In addition, freshmen on Academic Probation also have an extra half hour at night from 8:30 - 9:00. Every student on Academic Probation receives a weekly progress report from his teachers. The Academic Dean meets with these students on a regular basis to ensure their progress. Copies of these progress reports are sent home to the students’ parents. Students on Academic Probation are not allowed to use the computer lab without permission and are not allowed to play video games.

If the student’s grades have improved sufficiently, some or all of the restrictions may be removed at the mid-point of the quarter.
