Academic Guidelines

Guiding Growth

Academics and spiritual formation are the cornerstones of the St. Lawrence experience. Since St. Lawrence has, as part of the concrete implementation of its purpose, the preparation of adolescents for active ministry in the Catholic Church, its academic curriculum reflects a strong bias toward college preparation.

Graduation requirements result from combining state and school guidelines and requirements. Courses are generally taken in a prescribed order, but with the consent of the Academic Dean, they can be taken at different times. Students do have vacation reading to accomplish during the summer months. Driver’s Education and some fine arts and technical courses are available as electives.

Recognizing outstanding citizenship and leadership, along with scholarship, is an important part of helping young men become community leaders in the future.  Every member of the faculty and staff plays an important role in this process. Students qualify for the Rector's List Honor Roll if they have a Grade Point Average of 3.75 to 4.00. They qualify for the Dean's List Honor Roll if they have a Grade Point Average of 3.50 to 3.74.

Each student has the ultimate responsibility for his own academic schedule. This is one more way that St. Lawrence students mature into young men.

Each October, the school offers a series of standardized tests. One of the major purposes of the testing program is to provide teachers, parents and students with information to aid student learning. The results of all such tests are given to the students as a useful tool for planning future educational priorities.
